 Counseling and Advising Center - FAQ's

  1. How can a student find out who their counselor or academic advisor is?
    To verify who their counselor or faculty advisor is, a student can stop by the Counseling and Academic Advising Center in the Campus Center or call 740-0451.

  2. What if a student cannot make it to class (illness, death in family, accident)?
    If a student has a situation that prevents them from attending class or an appointment, they should call or email their instructor (this information is typically listed on the class syllabus) or appropriate personnel. If it is a serious, ongoing issue, a student should contact the Counseling and Academic Advising Center for assistance 740-0451.

  3. Where does a student go to find help when they are feeling overwhelmed and troubled?
    LCCC is eager to assist students with stress, relationship issues or just trying to sort out a decision they may need to make. The Counseling and Academic Advising Center is located in the Campus Center and urges students to seek assistance by stopping by or calling 740-0451.

  4. When do students purchase their books?
    The College Bookstore is located on the third floor of the Campus Center. Students should bring a copy of their class schedule with them so that staff may assist them in purchasing the books they need. The student must keep book receipts. If the student drops a course and wants a refund, they must bring the book receipt and Change of Course form (delete) with them to receive a refund or exchange. DO NOT WRITE IN THE TEXTBOOK until you are sure you are staying in the class to be able to receive a refund. A full refund is granted until the end of the second week of class. Books may also be ordered by phone at 740-0434 or online at www.luzerne.edu/bookstore.

  5. What is the difference between adding a class, dropping a class and withdrawing?
    Because the decision to add a class, drop a class or withdraw has far-reaching ramifications, the student should receive academic advising when considering any of these actions and check with the Financial Aid office to check how altering their schedule may impact their financial aid situation.

    Add

    • An Add is a method of increasing the number of credit(s) to a student’s schedule.
    • A student may add a class during the first week of classes. Keep in mind that a student may not schedule more than 18 credits in a semester without special permission from the Academic Affairs office.
      • The Spring 2008 semester deadline is Friday January 18, 2008.
      • This may be done by completing a Course Change form located in the Registrar’s office (Bldg. 5) or the Counseling and Academic Advising Center (Campus Center).
      • There is a fee of $10.00 to process this change.

    Drop and Add

    • A Drop/Add is a method of removing a class (es) and adding another to a student’s schedule.
    • During the first week of classes a student may drop a class and add another.
      • The Spring 2008 semester deadline is Friday January 18, 2008 .
      • There will be no record of this transaction on the student’s transcript.
      • This may be done by completing a Course Change form located in the Registrar’s office (Bldg. 5) or the Counseling and Academic Advising Center (Campus Center).

    Drop

    • The deadline for dropping a class for the…
    • Spring 2008 semester is Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
    • A grade of W is recorded on the student’s transcript. If a student fails to complete a course change form a grade of F will be recorded on the student’s transcript.
      • Therefore, if a student is in danger of failing a class he/she should consider this option.
      • This may be done by completing a Course Change form located in the Registrar’s office (Bldg. 5) or the Counseling and Academic Advising Center (Campus Center).

    Withdrawing

    • A withdrawal is a process of dropping all classes from a student’s schedule.
    • The deadline for withdrawing for the Spring 2008 semester is Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
    • Grades of W are recorded on the student’s transcript.
      • A student who stops attending classes without officially withdrawing may receive grades of F in all courses scheduled for that semester.
      • Please see the College Catalog for information on refunds from the first to the third week of classes.

  6. What is the tuition at LCCC?
    Tuition per credit (in county) is $ 80.00 a credit plus $10.00 General Service Fee and a $6.00 Technology Fee for all credit courses. Therefore 3 credits = $288.00. Further questions can be addressed to the Business Office at 740-0365.

  7. To find out about Financial Aid…
    The Financial Aid office located in Building 5 can assist you in assessing if you are eligible for Financial Aid (740-0389). To expedite the financial aid process, you can apply for aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov – keep in mind that you must also have a pin # (and if applicable one parent must also have a pin #) - you can apply for a pin # at www.pin.ed.gov.

  8. To find out about scholarships…
    To learn more about LCCC scholarships contact the College Foundation Office located on the second floor of the Campus Center at 740-0731.

  9. To gain direction about career direction or what major to choose?
    The LCCC Career Services Office is located in Building 9 and offers career testing and guidance to assist students in searching for direction for their future (740-0450).

  10. To find information on part-time work?
    The LCCC Career Services Office is located in Building 9 and has announcements about job openings, internships and resume writing workshops (740-0450).

  11. To find a tutor?
    The Learning Lab, on the first floor of the Campus Center, provides a tutor in all academic areas when requested by a student. 740-0775

  12. Inclement Weather?
    Call 740-0314. Instructor Cancellation? Call 740-0312.

  13. When do classes begin?
    Spring 2008 Semester classes begin Monday, January 14, 2008.
