EKG

Electrocardiograms (EKG/ECG's) are performed routinely at medical examinations, pre-surgical evaluations, before initiating fitness programs, as well as in the assessment and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Because these exams are conducted so extensively, professional, well-trained EKG Technicians are needed in numerous places throughout the healthcare industry, including hospitals, doctor's offices, cardiac rehabilitation clinics, and other medical settings. They provide doctors and other clinicians with vital diagnostic information regarding the electrical activity of the patient's heart.

The EKG Technician Training Program at Luzerne County Community College is a 60 hour program, consisting of 40 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of practical experience conducted in a clinical setting. * The internship must be completed within six months of the start date of the program. The classroom instruction includes courses on the following topics:

  • Patient communications
  • Confidentiality
  • Recording and reporting procedures
  • Basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system
  • Applicable medical terminology
  • Understanding of interference, measurements, and rhythms

Students successfully completing this program will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

*Note: Due to clinical regulations clinical hours are typically scheduled during first shift hours (7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.).

These programs are designed to allow you to enter the job market with a minimum amount of training time.
