Luzerne County Community College Honors Veterans at Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

The ceremony opened with greetings from Master of Ceremonies Laura Kapalka, Director of Financial Aid and Advisor to the LCCC Veterans Club. The United States Navy Sea Cadets Corps, Avoca, presented the Colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Juan de la Cruz of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Olivia Sherrick '22 performed the National Anthem.

LCCC President John Yudichak welcomed attendees and shared a story that became the heart of this year's ceremony -- the story of Frank Carden '78, retired Master Gunnery Sergeant, United States Marine Corps, and LCCC alumnus.

Recently, Mr. Carden contacted the College asking if he could receive a copy of his diploma. He explained that although he completed his coursework at LCCC in 1978, he never officially received his diploma. Returning from war, beginning his studies, and starting a young family had created financial barriers at the time. Records later confirmed that a diploma was never issued because the graduation request and fee were never submitted -- likely due to those very circumstances.

Today, nearly five decades later, LCCC had the honor of formally presenting Mr. Carden with the diploma he earned. In his remarks, Mr. Carden reflected on perseverance, service, and the importance of educational opportunity for veterans.

"Frank's story reminds us that service does not end when the uniform comes off," President Yudichak shared. "It continues in classrooms, in careers, and in communities ? and it is our responsibility to walk alongside our veterans every step of the way."

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks and the retiring of the Colors by Rev. Brian Van Fossen of Saint Faustina Church and Chaplain for the Nanticoke Fire Department.

Luzerne County Community College extends its deepest gratitude to all who have served and continue to serve our country.
