English as a Second Language (ESL) Academic Program


Luzerne County Community College English as a Second Language (ESL) intensive credit program is designed to help you learn the necessary English language skills to enroll in college-level courses. The goal of this comprehensive program is to help you achieve the level of language proficiency required to succeed in college and beyond. Classes are offered day and night at multiple campus locations, customized to your individual level. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify.

The Curriculum

Students enrolled in the program take two semesters of ESL courses that include reading, writing, speaking and listening. A third semester includes college-level courses required for your major. Each course is supported by an hour a week of language lab and tutoring. A typical schedule would be classes Monday and Wednes- day 9 AM - 3:25 PM, and Friday 9 - 11 AM. The evening schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 - 8:55 PM.

First Semester
  • Fundamentals of Grammar (6 credits)
  • Reading and Vocabulary (3 credits)
  • Communication Skills (3 credits)
Second Semester
  • ESL 028 Fundamentals of Writing (6 credits)
  • ESL 029 Reading and Vocabulary II (3 credits)
  • ESL 030 Advanced Communication Skills (3 credits)
Third Semester
  • ENG 101B English Composition (3 credits)
  • FYE 103 First Year Experience (3 credits)
  • MAT 101 or CIS 110 Introduction to Microcomputers (3 credits)
  • Elective (3 credits)
