English as a Second Language Classes

Request Information

The ALTA Program provides FREE basic ESL classes online and in-person in Luzerne County. English as a Second Language, or ESL, classes are designed for the adult with limited English proficiency; who was not born in the United States; or whose first language is a language other than English; or who came from an environment where a language other than English is dominant; or who is an American Indian or Alaska Native who comes from an environment where a language other than English has had a significant impact on his/her level of English language proficiency; and by reason thereof, has sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language.

Mastering the English language opens up a world of opportunities. Our ESL program is designed to help non-native English speakers improve their language skills in a supportive and immersive environment. Whether you're a beginner or seeking to refine your language abilities, our experienced instructors will help you enhance your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

The ALTA Program ESL classes can help prepare you to take the US citizenship test, attend college, and/or obtain employment. Adults 18 years and older may enroll in classes. To get started, prospective students must go through an orientation where their Reading and Listening skills are tested. Students are placed into three levels of instruction (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) based on the results of their pretests.

Classes start four times a year (summer, fall, winter, and spring). Currently, names are placed on a waiting list and students are contacted when it is time to attend orientation. Classes are offered during the day at the Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton Centers of LCCC.
